Day of Healing - Bell Ringing Ceremony

Day of Healing - Bell Ringing Ceremony

JOIN FR. JOE THIS SUNDAY AT 1:45pm for the Day of Healing and Nationwide Bell Ringing!

August 25th is the 400th anniversary of the first landing of enslaved Africans in English-occupied North America at Point Comfort in Hampton, Virginia, now part of Fort Monroe National Monument, a unit of the National Park System. The anniversary will be commemorated as a day of healing and reconciliation. Bells will be rung, simultaneously across the nation for four minutes - one for each century - to honor the first Africans who landed in 1619 at Point Comfort and 400 years of African American History.

This upcoming Sunday, August 25th, at 1:45pm, Fr. Joseph Alsay invites all in our greater OKC community to join at St. Augustine's to participate in the Day of Healing and Nationwide Bell Ringing that will take place across our nation at 3pm EDT (2pm in Oklahoma).

Christ Church, Tulsa will also partake in the ceremony.

Bells are symbols of freedom! They are rung for joy, sorrow, alarm and celebrations - universal concepts in each of our lives. This symbolic gesture will enable Americans from all walks of life to participate in this historic moment from wherever they are - to capture the spirit of healing and reconciliation while honoring the significance of 400 years of African American history and culture.

Please consider 'coming back' to church this upcoming Sunday afternoon, and joining Fr. Joe for the bell ringing. If you're able to attend, RSVP to our Member Engagement Coordinator, Sarah-Emily Steinhardt at memberengagement@sac-okc.org
