Christmas Message 2019
In the first chapter of John's Gospel, sometimes referred to as the prologue to the Gospel, sometimes spoken of as the whole Gospel in miniature the Gospel writer says this. As he reflects on the coming of God into the world in the person of Jesus. As he reflects on Christmas. He says, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it.
I don't think it's an accident that long ago, followers of Jesus began to commemorate his coming into the world when the world seemed to be at its darkest.
It's probably not an accident that we observe Christmas soon after December 21, the winter solstice. The winter solstice being in the Northern Hemisphere the darkest time of the year.
Undoubtedly, these ancient Christians who began to celebrate the coming of God into the world, they knew very well that this Jesus, his teachings, his message, his spirit, his example, his life points us to the way of life itself, a way of life, where we take care of each other. A way of life, where we care for God's world. A way of life, where we are in a loving relationship with our God, and with each other as children of the one God, who has created us all.
They also knew John's Gospel and John's Christmas story. Now there are no angels in John's Christmas story. There are no wise men coming from afar. There's no baby lying in a manger. There's no angel choir singing Gloria in excelsis Deo in the highest of the heavens. There are no shepherds tending their flocks by night. Matthew and Luke tell those stories. In John, it is the poetry of new possibility, born of the reality of God when God breaks into the world.
It's not an accident that long ago, followers of Jesus began to commemorate his birth, his coming into the world. When the world seemed darkest. When hope seemed to be dashed on the altar of reality. It is not an accident that we too, commemorate his coming, when things do not always look right in this world.
But there is a God. And there is Jesus. And even in the darkest night. That light once shined and will shine still. His way of love is the way of life. It is the light of the world. And the light of that love shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not, cannot, and will not overcome it.

Mensaje de Navidad 2019
En el primer capítulo del Evangelio de Juan, que a veces se conoce como el prólogo del Evangelio, y a veces se celebra como el Evangelio entero en miniatura, el escritor evangélico dice lo siguiente. Mientras reflexiona sobre la venida de Dios al mundo en la persona de Jesús, reflexiona sobre la Navidad y dice, esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.
No creo que sea por casualidad que hace tanto tiempo, los seguidores de Jesús comenzaron a conmemorar su venida al mundo cuando el mundo parecía estar en su momento más oscuro.
Probablemente no sea por casualidad que observemos la Navidad poco después del 21 de diciembre, el solsticio de invierno. El solsticio de invierno en el hemisferio norte es la época más oscura del año.
Sin duda, estos antiguos cristianos que comenzaron a celebrar la venida de Dios al mundo sabían muy bien que este Jesús, sus enseñanzas, su mensaje, su espíritu, su ejemplo, su vida, nos señala al camino de la vida misma. Un estilo de vida en el cual nos cuidamos unos a los otros. Un estilo de vida, en el cual cuidamos del mundo de Dios. Un estilo de vida, en el cual participamos de una relación amorosa con nuestro Dios, y con los demás como hijos del solo Dios que no creó a todos.
También conocían la historia de la Navidad del Evangelio de Juan. Ahora bien, no hay ángeles en la historia de la Navidad de Juan. No hay reyes magos que llegan de tierras lejanas. No hay ningún bebé acostado en un pesebre. No hay ningún coro de ángeles que cante Gloria in excelsis Deo en las alturas. Aquí no hay pastores que cuiden de sus rebaños en la noche. Mateo y Lucas cuentan esas historias. En la de Juan hay la poesía de una nueva posibilidad, nacida de la realidad de Dios cuando Dios irrumpe en el mundo.
No es por casualidad que hace tanto tiempo, los seguidores de Jesús comenzaron a conmemorar su nacimiento, su venida al mundo. Cuando el mundo parecía estar envuelto en tinieblas. Cuando la esperanza parecía haberse truncado en el altar de la realidad. No es por casualidad que nosotros conmemoremos su venida, cuando las cosas no siempre parezcan marchar bien en este mundo.
Pero hay un Dios. Y ahí está Jesús. E incluso en la noche más oscura. Esa luz una vez brilló y que seguirá brillando. Su camino del amor es un estilo de la vida. Es la luz del mundo. Y esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.
Dios los ama. Dios los bendiga y que tengan una Feliz Navidad y que este mundo sea bendecido. Amén.
