2020 Bishop's Appeal

2020 Bishop's Appeal

When we prayerfully considered how best to use the Bishop’s Appeal this year, and what faith-based organizations in Oklahoma (Episcopalian or not) were sacrificially serving those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, one stood above the rest. Historic Vernon A.M.E. Church in Tulsa has served over 190,000 meals in their community since March 2020 through meals and bags of groceries.

Church in Tulsa has served over 200,000 meals in their community since March 2020 through meals and bags of groceries.

This year’s Bishop’s Annual Appeal will benefit Historic Vernon A.M.E. Church, and we will match all gifts up to $50,000 total. Let’s come together to bless this life-changing ministry of mercy and justice with a remarkable $100,000 donation by doubling every contribution from individuals, congregations, and institutions.

Roughly half of the funds will help upgrade their kitchen, where the meals are prepared. The other half will help Rev. Dr. Turner and the congregation build a prayer wall for those who visit the church to learn about the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre (Historic Vernon A.M.E. Church is the only black-owned building that remains from that tragic day).
