As a priest with
over 30 years of experience in congregational and diocesan settings, Canon Michael now seeks to explore interesting ways to be of service to the Church as a “retired”
priest. Canon Michael began his working life as a book designer and his call as a priest
began while in the publishing business. Canon Michael completed studies at the General
Theological Seminary in 1987 and took a call to serve in the Diocese of
Southwest Florida serving parishes in Naples and Marco Island and in 1997, as
Canon to the Ordinary. He served in this capacity under the leadership of
Bishops John Lipscomb and Dabney Smith, 10 years each.
He retired from active
service in December of 2018. In 21 years of Diocesan life, Canon Michael supervised over
200 transitions in leadership. He is trained in conflict management,
congregational development and interim ministry. He has served on many Diocesan
commissions and committees. He currently serves as an ex officio member of the
Constitution and Canons Committee of the Diocese as a member of the Alumni
Executive Committee of the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Recently, he completed service as Interim Rector of All Angels by the Sea
Episcopal Church, Longboat Key, FL.
Michael has been married over 45 years to wife, Bonnie Jean MacDonald, and they have three children and three grandchildren.
