Canon Tony functions in a consulting, coaching, and advising role, providing mediation, facilitation, clergy wellness and congregational support services.
Canon Tony worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for many years before turning his attention toward organizations. Tony applied his post-graduate family systems training (Menninger Foundation, Topeka, Kansas, 1987) along with experience from these years of family therapy practice to understand organizational systems. Earning a Ph.D. in Educational Technology (University of Oklahoma, 1995), he began a second career in organizational consulting. Tony’s doctorate focused on the area of human performance and organizational improvement. His consulting work evolved around process design, team interventions, leadership and management development.
Tony was ordained a Vocational Deacon in 1997. He served at St. Mary’s, Edmond and then St. Augustine of Canterbury, Oklahoma City. At his rector’s prompting, Tony entered the process to become ordained a priest. After completing his training at the IONA School of Formation, Tony was ordained a priest in May 2018. In addition to serving as Priest Associate at St. Augustine’s, Tony also serves the Diocese as Canon Advisor. In this role, Canon Tony provides pastoral care for the clergy of the Diocese, coaching and organizational consulting.
Over the years, Tony has served the Diocese in numerous capacities: co-initiating the Fresh Start Program; serving on the Commission on Ministry for several years; co-facilitating the Aspirancy Program for those discerning a call to ordained ministry; providing a Continued Discernment process with those re-directed to lay ministry; serving on the IONA School of Formation Steering Committee and faculty since its inception (aside from his student years); consulting with troubled parishes and institutions through listening sessions and making procedural recommendations to the Bishop. Canon Tony initiated the Natural Church Development (NCD) initiative in the Diocese and currently serves as an Invite Welcome Connect coach.
Fr. Tony is married to Marian, a retired senior executive at Devon Energy. Their blended family is comprised of three daughters and nine grandchildren. In Canon Tony’s spare time, he enjoys woodworking.
