The 81st Annual ECW Conference and Bishop’s Day was hosted by the gracious and welcoming women of The Church of the Resurrection in Oklahoma City on April 27th - 28th. The conference began on a lovely Friday evening with choral evensong followed by a reception of delicious refreshments and treats. All were treated to a collection of beautiful music and Scripture, with plenty of time for renewing old friendships or making new acquaintances. The conference was well attended by the women and clergy of the diocese, and represented 16 churches in the diocese. The conference continued on a beautiful Saturday morning as the women were invited to experience the annual conference in a new and changed one-day style format. The day began with a light continental breakfast along with time for visiting the exhibits. The Rev. Sean Ekberg, Rector of Church of the Resurrection, welcomed the group with a blessing and prayer.
“Living the Good News” was this year’s conference theme. What better way to make a day of living the good news more extraordinary than to have for a keynote speaker the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston. Bishop Charleston shared his story of faith and vision and offered words of encouragement for living out our call to spread the good news of Jesus. His great love for all of creation nurtured and inspired the group to search for the spirit in the touch of the earth, the sounds of our neighbor and in the beauty that lies all around us. Living out the Good News is found in all of our relationships. Bishop Charleston’s example of his own call to follow Christ was evident in his talk about what the Good News can mean for each of us.
One of the opportunities for living the good news, and to be able to grow and strengthen our diocesan ECW is the need to be more visible in our outreach. The Rev. Susanne Methvin, with Clover House in Salina, Kansas, gave a moving talk about the ministry of the home for girls who are survivors of trafficking. Clover House provides a community of love that responds to each girl’s unique needs. This year’s alms at the Holy Eucharist was given to Clover House and totaled over $2,700.00. Be watching for more news on our outreach with Clover House!
During our wonderful buffet lunch, Bishop Ed presented the Diamond Jubliee recipients with a rose and certificate. Eleven women were in attendance for celebrating their 75 years of baptism!! A special treat during lunch was a story of vision, love, and faith shared by Debbie Konienczny. Debbie’s witness of grace and affirmation was truly amazing!
We are very grateful to all our speakers for their love and support to the women of the diocese. We are especially thankful to Bishop Ed for his leadership, support, and dedication to us as we strive to be Episcopal Church Women living the Good News of Jesus. We appreciate all who attended and provided valuable feedback on this year’s changes, and as we move forward to make the annual conference a place of outreach, spiritual enrichment, and fellowship.
Please mark your calendars for next year’s Annual Conference and Bishop’s Day on May 3 - 4, 2019 at St. Crispin’s!!
