On Saturday, January 19th, at All Saints' Episcopal
Church in McAlester, Jeromy Michael Matkin was ordained to the Sacred Order of
Deacons by Bishop Edward J. Konieczny.
This joyful celebration began with the angelic choir leading
the congregation in song. Michael was then officially presented by members of
his community to Bishop Ed for ordination. Michael then affirmed that he was
ready to be ordained and signed the Declaration attesting his commitment
to the “…doctrine, discipline, and worship…” of The Episcopal Church. Bishop Ed
then led the congregation in the Litany of Ordinations, offering prayers for Michael,
for those in need, for the Church, and for the world.
Upon the conclusion of the Scripture readings, the Rev.
Everett Lees offered a powerful sermon. He preached about the special vocation
of deacon: to bring the cares of the world to the Church, to lead us in servant
ministry, and to guide us in serving those in need as we are called to do. He
reaffirmed Michael’s unique gifts and his call to ordained life.
The service then continued with Bishop Ed leading the
Examination of Deacons, followed by the Ordination and Consecration. He then
laid his hands upon Michael’s head to ordain him a deacon. It was an incredibly
powerful moment in Michael’s ministry journey.
Michael was then vested by his loved ones, and presented with
a Bible from Bishop Ed. He was then officially presented to the congregation as
the newest deacon in The Episcopal Church. The congregation erupted with celebratory
