St. Crispin’s Cook-Off and Dedication

St. Crispin’s Cook-Off and Dedication

“Mmmmm that smells so good!!”
The words above seemed to be the mantra at this past Saturday’s St. Crispin’s Cook-Off and Dedication. We had an incredible turnout for the second-annual St. Crispin’s Cook-Off, which included the dedication of our new facilities—The Bishop Edward J. Konieczny Dining Hall and The Watson Pavilion.
The event unofficially began Friday night around five o’clock as we welcomed nine smoke teams to the St. Crispin’s grounds, a 45% increase in team registrations from last year! The task this year for our smoke teams was to cook the best brisket, ribs and pork butt that they could muster. Friday night also included a dinner that was sponsored by Schwab’s Meat Co; it was no meager fare, as the teams and volunteers enjoyed bratwurst, smoked sausage, hot-links, and hot dogs!
Saturday was something to remember! The event officially kicked off at 10:30 a.m. when the Oklahoma City Thunder brought an entire fleet of entertainment and workers: Thunder Drummers, Thunder Girls, Storm Chasers and, of course, who could miss RUMBLE!? St. Crispin’s was the willing and gracious recipient of OKC Thunder-logoed baskeball courts for our new Watson Pavilion; this generous donation was contributed by the Thunder Cares Foundation and the Oklahoma City Thunder. We are equally thankful for the generous support of Clay and Louise Bennet; their giving hearts made this gift come to fruition.
Next up was the dedication of the new Bishop Edward J. Konieczny Dining Hall. It was an extraordinary moment as the bishop cut the ribbon—held by camp and conference center directors’ Joanne and Mike Roberts—and dedicated the new beautiful space. Bishop Ed’s heartfelt gratitude was palpable as he spoke his appreciation to the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, and to St. Crispin’s, for their willingness to name the new dining hall after him.

In between the ribbon cutting and the speeches, everyone in attendance was able to dig-in to some fantastic barbecue! We had built up an appetite during the morning due to the smells and smoke created by our competitors. The product did not disappoint! People lined up, filled their plates, emptied them, and came back for more. Although all the food was excellent, we still had to name a Grand Champion of the competition, but everyone’s food was top-notch.
This year’s winner—in all three categories—was  ‘Over-the-Hill BBQ’—a dynamic duo of our Roman Catholic brothers, Jim Cox and Dale Sliger, from the Knights of Columbus! The judges were beyond impressed with their submissions, and they took home the title as the 2018 St. Crispin’s Cook-Off Grand Champions! Coming in a close second place were Christ Church Tulsa, and the Smokey-Joes of Emmanuel, Shawnee.
It was an incredible event. The planning committee, the Leadership Council of St. Crispin’s, Joanne and Mike, and especially Bishop Ed are all deeply thankful to have shared the food, fun, fellowship and faithful dedications of facilities with all of those in attendance, and all of those who followed the event on social media.
