St. Bede’s Supports Cleveland School Students with Backpacks and More
St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Westport recently provided 120 backpacks filled with school supplies for students in need within the Cleveland Public Schools. This growing ministry reflects a commitment that began over four years ago, when the congregation began exploring ways to connect with their local community.
One parishioner, a teacher in the Cleveland school system, shared with the congregation the challenges many students face, particularly those from lower-income families. Through this conversation, the church identified two primary areas of need: backpacks and basic personal necessities.
In 2022, St. Bede’s received a Vitality Experimental Grant from the diocese to help launch what has become their backpack ministry. The initial grant was a great starting point, and since then, the program has been sustained through ongoing support from church members.
Beyond school supplies, St. Bede’s has also responded to the broader personal needs of students, such as clothing, haircuts, eyeglasses, and hygiene products. To help meet these needs, each of the four partner schools receives $400 at the start of the academic year, followed by $100 each month throughout the school year.
Fr. Lee Stephens, Vicar of St. Bede’s, shared why this ministry is so important to the congregation:
“We view this as an extension of Jesus' ministry to people in need. The backpacks are purchased, filled and blessed with love. Frequently the principals and staff report on how these gifts are making a difference for the students. We are grateful for this connection with the community.”
He added,
“I often refer to St. Bede's as a spiritual oasis in the woods of Westport, but outreach is a vital part of who we are as a church.”
St. Bede’s Backpack Ministry is a great example of external vitality. External vitality is serving beyond our church walls and meeting our neighbors. If you're interested in applying for a Vitality Grant or learning more about congregational vitality, click HERE.
