Indoor Snowball Fight at St. Christopher’s MWC

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Midwest City welcomed families from across the area to an Indoor Snowball Fight on Jan. 3. The snowball fight proved to be very popular, with 180 people attending. The event featured games, a cash drawing, snacks, and a hot chocolate bar. Funding for the event was made possible through a $500 Diocesan Congregational Vitality Grant.

St. Christopher’s leaders organized the event to learn more about their neighborhood and build stronger connections with local families. In planning the event, parish members asked several guiding questions: How can St. Christopher’s form new relationships with nearby residents? What are neighbors looking for in a church community? Are they aware of St. Christopher’s presence? And how might the church deepen its relationship with neighborhood children who frequently use the church parking lot to play basketball?

The event was spearheaded by Shelley Kehl, a professional educator and member of St. Christopher’s. Kehl said the primary goal was outreach. “The purpose was to have the community get to know us and to share God’s love with the community. As a result of the surveys we had people fill out, 11 people asked to be added to the newsletter, and we also received several prayer requests.”

She also shared a memorable moment following the event. “The day after the event, one of the drawing winners came by to get their prize. She told me that when they pulled into the parking lot, her little girl asked, ‘Are we here to have more fun?’ That filled my heart with joy.”

Shelley also noted that the response reinforced the value of hosting family-friendly events at St. Christopher’s. “We want children to see worship and church as fun places to be. Another takeaway was that when we offer family events like this, the community will come. We had people attend from as far away as Mustang.”
