My Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

On April 2nd, teachers in school districts across Oklahoma plan to begin a walkout in protest of low teacher salaries and funding for education. According to reports, Oklahoma is listed last in the United States in the ranking of teacher pay and overall funding for education.

The failure of our State Leaders to provide adequate resources for education has forced actions that will impact nearly 500,000 students in over 170 school districts. In addition to missing classes, this action will impact state and national testing; food programs for those in need; school-related activities, sports, and after-school programs; maintaining a safe place for students to be throughout the day; and in some cases, jeopardize students' graduations.

The Gospel calls on us to "...love your neighbor as yourself..." Our Baptismal Covenant asks us if we will "...seek and serve Christ in all persons..." and "...strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?" We answer both of these questions with, "I will, with God's help." Our children, our families, and our neighbors deserve better than these circumstances.

I ask you to join me in praying and calling upon those who can make a difference, to act in bringing about a fair, just, and expeditious resolution in support of our students, parents, and teachers.

O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faithfully,
+Bishop Ed
