Getting to know Canon Michael Durning

Getting to know Canon Michael Durning

I come to Oklahoma from the Diocese of Southwest Florida, which has been home since 1988.  I was made Canon to the Ordinary by Bishop John Lipscomb in 1997 and again by his successor, Dabney Smith in 2007.  I was once the Rector of St. Mark’s Marco Island and Associate Rector at St. John’s Naples, FL.  For eleven years I was employed as an Art Director for the Farm Journal,  where I designed books on cooking and crafts.

There are many things in life that give me joy.  One is a lifelong interest in music.  I brought my fiddle, banjo and guitar to Oklahoma and my only frustration is not having enough time to play.  For the past few years I’ve been involved with traditional Celtic music and I’ve been a part of Sessions in St. Augustine Sarasota, Savannah, GA and New York City.

I also enjoy storytelling as part of my vocation.  I believe that people will relate better to a Gospel truth if the preacher can find a way to personally relate to a struggle related to that truth.

My family is easily my highest value.  Bonnie Jean and I have been married for 46 years.  I value our relationship as the sharpest and clearest lens through which to live my vocation.  We are blessed with three sons and three grandsons and we will miss them terribly as we live out our Oklahoma stay.  Nevertheless our prayers and our discussions clearly tell us that we are called to be here now.  Even in our first weeks, our discoveries have led to friendships and revelations that will make a long-lasting part of the story that God has given us.

Bishop Ed, Debbie and the Staff have gone out of their way to make us feel welcomed and appreciated.  Wherever we go in Oklahoma, we are impressed with the genuine friendliness of the people we meet and our hearts are glad.  We look forward to getting out into the Diocese to discover the unique blessings that are part of the Church in Oklahoma.
