St. John's Welcomes Sovereign Community School

St. John's Welcomes Sovereign Community School

On Thursday, May 30, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Oklahoma City, opened its doors for a welcoming, open house event put on by the Sovereign Community School, a start up charter middle-school and high school that began renting our school space, formerly occupied by St. John’s School.  While open to all families, SCS is chartered by the State Board of Education to serve indigenous families of all tribes in the OKC area.

Members of St. John’s were present as school families and interested persons from the community toured classrooms, met with teachers and members of the board of SCS and were given opportunity to register for classes.  There was a vibrant sense of a new and exciting community as we shared together in food and fellowship.  One of St. John’s Vestry members present said, “It’s like having them here ionizes the air."  The school will start in the fall with 6th and 9th grades and will add a grade each year in both middle and high school levels.

The Mission of Sovereign Community School is to "activate the next generation of indigenous leaders by by engaging our youth with rigorous, culturally relevant curriculum that challenges them to understand and affirm their roles as citizens in our many Native nations.”

Your prayers are welcome as we at St. John’s welcome our new tenants and partners in our shared calling to "respect the dignity of every human being" and to "love our neighbors as ourselves.”
