Socks for Jesus House

Socks for Jesus House

In the fall, St. Christopher, Midwest City's youth leader Shirley Madden remembered the years she worked at a halfway house in OKC and the continued need for socks for the residents. She proposed a sock campaign to the Wise Acres (St. Christopher's youth), to be delivered to Jesus House, a shelter and mission just west of downtown OKC.

Over the next few months, the youth collected new and gently used socks from members of the congregation and beyond.

On Dec. 20, a couple of the youth and the adult leaders went to Jesus House to deliver almost 600 pairs of socks for all ages, ranging from fun patterns to heavy duty work socks. The teens got to see a little bit of Jesus House's daily operations and meet the warehouse crew that receives donations.

On the way home, the youth had a conversation about what they had seen and how it made them think differently about people experiencing homelessness. Garrett Madden, one of the youth, said it helped him put a face on homelessness so he could think about it less as a theoretical issue and more about what it might be like to be an individual experiencing homelessness.

St. Christopher's Wise Acres thanks everyone who contributed to the sock campaign and are thinking about what they might do for their next service project.
