Ordination of Stephen Howard Miller

Ordination of Stephen Howard Miller

On Friday, January 18th, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Stillwater, the Rev. Stephen Howard Miller was ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests by Bishop Edward J. Konieczny. St. Andrew’s was full of those ready to celebrate Stephen taking this next step in his ministry.

The joyful choir ushered in the procession of the service, and the congregation quickly joined to fill the church with beautiful music. The service continued with members of Stephen’s community officially presenting him to Bishop Ed for ordination. Stephen then confidently stated his belief in the call to ordained life and his readiness to be ordained. Stephen then signed the official Declaration, stating his belief in the Holy Scriptures and adherence to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of The Episcopal Church. Following this, the service continued with Litany for Ordinations, in which Bishop Ed led the congregation in prayers for Stephen and his call to ordained life, the mission of the Church, and the world.

Readings from Scripture followed, and then the Rev. Mike Stephenson offered a thoughtful sermon on the unique gifts Stephen will bring to his new ministry as a priest. He spoke of the unique vocation of priest, and reaffirmed Stephen’s readiness for this next step in his vocation.

The service continue with the Examination and Consecration. Bishop Ed then led the congregation in the Veni Creator Spiritus, an ancient hymn to the Holy Spirit, followed by a period of solemn, silent prayer. Then, as he laid his hands upon Stephen’s head and prayed the Prayer of Consecration, priests from around the diocese, also laid their hands on Stephen, joining in ushering him into the Sacred Order of Priests.

Loved ones then presented Stephen with vestments and Bishop Ed presented him with a Bible, important symbols of the beginning of this next step in Stephen’s vocational journey. Bishop Ed then presented the newest priest in The Episcopal Church, and the congregation joined in joyous celebration! Following the exchange of the Peace, the service continued with Holy Communion, in which the new priest served alongside Bishop Ed.

Upon the conclusion of the service, the friendly hospitality team of St. Andrew’s presented a joyful reception for all. The congregation joined Stephen and his family in this wonderful celebration!

The Rev. Stephen Miller will be serving as Bi-vocational Priest-in-Charge of St. Mark’s, Perry.
